3 Popular Disney World Attractions That May Cause Motion Sickness

Walt Disney World is full of incredibly ride technology that will immerse guest into truly magical ride experiences. That being said, not everyone will enjoy all of the rides that Disney World has to offer.

If you are prone to motion sickness or are sensitive to motion, there are some attractions at Walt Disney World you may want to avoid or, at least, use caution before riding. Remember, each person is very different so you may have a totally difference experience. Here’s our top 5 rides that may cause you to feel sick.

Mission Space

This attraction is located in EPCOT, in the World Discovery area of the park. This ride is very unique and can be intense depending on which level you choose to ride. This attraction offers guests a one-of-a-kind experience that launches visitors into a simulated space adventure with an intense liftoff followed by the sensation of weightlessness in outer space.

Mission Space was created in collaboration with former NASA advisors, astronauts and scientists, along with the Walt Disney Imagineering team. The attraction uses new technology, which makes it the first ride system to take attraction visitors straight up in a simulated flight experience.

The vehicles have four seats in a row with dividers running between each seat, which face four video monitors and control switches. Each seat is equipped with a locking "over-the-shoulder" harness restraint, and its own sound system. The vehicles interior are very detailed, having a large number of controls and displays in front of each seat, along with a joystick that each person uses. The vehicles front portion folds downwards and is used for loading and unloading the compartment.

There’s a green level (less intense experience) that takes guest into Earth’s orbit with view of Earth’s surface, and there’s level orange. Level orange is a very intense ride that take visitors to Mars while encountering some issues along the way. This ride is so intense that there are motion sickness bags located on the ride.

We recommend that you start off on level green before advancing to orange. Feeling sick in EPCOT is no fun. Especially if you’re wanting to enjoy festival food booths!

Star Tours

This flight simulator ride was inspired by the popular Star Wars movies. It’s situated on the far left of Disney’s Hollywood Studios, beyond Echo Lake. The new StarSpeeder 1000 takes passengers to a variety of different planets in the Star Wars universe, where they will experience several different adventures on a motion-simulated space flight all in 3D! With more than 60 different combinations, guests can have a new experience with every flight.

While the original attraction featured only one destination (Endor) and one flight experience, the new version takes travelers to several different locations — and frequent flyers will find that it’s rarely the same three places! In fact, there are more than 60 different experiences with destinations like Naboo, Tatooine, Hoth, Kashyyk and Coruscant. With this attraction being be an enclosed 3D flight simulator, it can be a little to much for some to handle.

Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run

Smugglers Run lets guests fly Millennium Falcon, the “fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy.” Guests approaching the attraction will see a life-size Millennium Falcon parked outside the spaceport.

To board, you’re recruited by Hondo Ohnaka, an animatronic pirate who has cut a deal with Chewbacca to use the Falcon for some sketchy transportation business.

Each rider is assigned a station: a pilot, copilot, gunners, and engineers. By far, the best role is that of pilot.

Computer-generated scenery is projected on an ultra- HD dome outside the windshield. What separates this ride from other simulators (such as Star Tours) are 200 buttons, switches, and levers in the cockpit. The switches will illuminate alerting you in to the correct moment to punch them.

Another difference between Smugglers Run and other simulators is that the video screens displaying the action aren’t attached to the ride vehicle. This not only allows for a more realistic display of the action but also reduces the potential for motion sickness. However, Due to the quick movements and the screen simulation, this ride is known to cause some to loose their blue milk. May the force be with you!
